1 In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, TakingITGlobal's Connected North program launched the Fireside Chats initiative to develop inspiring videos about education and career pathways for students to access at home. The web site (www.firesidechats.ca) has now grown into a home for more than 100 videos, articles and illustrations made possible through funding from RBC Foundation in support of RBC Future Launch. This teacher guide includes fully developed lesson plans to accompany our first volume of Fireside Chat interviews with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit role models. Through these lesson plans, students will explore the career journeys of inspiring Indigenous leaders and engage in learning activities to increase their understanding of the diverse career categories discussed in the videos. Career categories explored in this teacher guide include Activism, Arts/Graphic Arts, Business and Entrepreneurship, Community Development, Computer Science, Culture, Educa- tion, Entertainment, Government, Health and Science, Skilled Trades, and Sports and Recreation. These lessons are best suited for use in Grade 8 – 12 classrooms, and many of the lesson are cross curricular – bridging subjects such as English Language Arts, Indigenous Studies, Art/ Graphic Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Computer Science and more! At the beginning of each lesson, we've included course connections for Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Ontario, and Yukon. The lesson plans are formatted using the AAAA format. Activating activities will assess students' prior knowledge and pique students' interest in the topic. Acquire activities involve students watching the Fireside Chat interview either individually or together as a class. During the apply section, students will demonstrate their learning through a variety of engaging and relevant learning activities. The final section - assessment - includes several examples of formative and summative assessment options. Each lesson also includes all supplementary materials such as handouts and rubrics. Some lessons include a section called Take Learning Further, in which we provide extension activities if students would like to deepen their understanding of the topic. Since the Fireside Chat interviews provide students with a sense of Indigenous cultural pride, it was important to us to include Indigenous learning processes throughout. Examples of Indige- nous learning processes included in this guide are engaging in respectful dialogue (sometimes in the form of a sharing circle), learning from local Elders/Knowledge keepers, learning through the land, storytelling, and creating projects that give back to the community. We hope your students are inspired through each lesson!
