OVERVIEW
Throughout this lesson, students will learn about Indigenous farming/agriculture, growing
traditional medicine plants, and the various traditional medicines and foods that can be found
in their own backyards. Students will connect the four aspects of life (Mother Earth, Plants,
Humans and Animals) including impacts and connections to gardens and agriculture.
Students will experience how growing their own food, and having food sovereignty in their
own backyards, helps connect them to the land. Students will watch Joy Hall's interview
about her career as an organic vegetable farmer. Students will take the information learned
in the video and apply the concepts to their own province. Students will perform an inqui-
ry-based research project about what types of native fruits and vegetables that can be
cultivated, eaten and grown in their province and where their favourite foods come from.
Students will create a brochure highlighting their research. Students will be assessed from
an inquiry-project brochure rubric. To take students learning further, students may create a
classroom garden.
