Lesson Four: Dr. Glen Sharpe 190 APPLY: MINDSET AND EMBRACING FAILURE REFLECTION Inform the class that Dr. Glen Sharpe alludes to an important concept in his Fireside Chat inter- view – mindset. Inform the class that according to Stanford psychologist, Carol Dweck, people have one of two types of mindsets – fixed or growth. Mindset refers to a person's underlying beliefs about learning and intelligence. 1 Explain that a person with a fixed mindset believes that intelligence is fixed, or static, meaning it cannot be changed. On the other hand, a person with a growth mindset believes that intel- ligence can be developed. Carol Dweck's research focuses on how we can transform fixed mindsets to growth mindsets so that people, and in particular – students - can learn to rebound after failure rather than be devastated by small setbacks. 2 Inform students that their assignment today will be to write about a time they learned from fail- ure. Even if they didn't think of it as a learning experience at the time, how can they make it into a learning experience now? Teachers are encouraged to share a personal example with the class to help get them thinking. Allow students time to write their reflection. Use the "Reflection Rubric" to grade their writing. ASSESS: The "Agree/Disagree" activity is a form of formative assessment. This activity will enable teachers and students to gauge their own and other's personal beliefs about success and failure. The debriefing questions after Dr. Glen Sharpe's interview with Fireside Chats is a form of forma- tive assessment. Teachers will be able to check students' comprehension of the topics discussed in the video. The written reflection is a form of summative assessment. Teachers will be able to assess stu- dents' writing and connections to other parts of the lesson. 1 "The Impact of a Growth Mindset".
