Lesson Four: Dr. Glen Sharpe 189 Statements: 1.Either I'm good at something or I'm not. 2.There's no point in trying if I'm going to fail. 3.Failure is permanent. 4.Success is permanent. 5.Other peoples' success intimidates me. 6.Learning is a result of failure. 7.Success comes to those who don't give up. 8.Anyone can be successful if they try hard enough. 9.I find it easy to admit I need help. 10.No one is born smart. Once the activity is done, ask students to raise their hands if they mainly answered "agree" to the first five statements. Inform these students that they have what is referred to as a "fixed mindset". Ask students to raise their hands if they mainly answered "agree" to the last five statements. Inform these students that they have what is referred to as a "growth mindset". Inform students that we will explore these concepts of mindset more in the latter half of the lesson but for now, they will hear from Indigenous educator, Dr. Glen Sharpe. ACQUIRE: DR. Dr. Sharpe's primary research interests include Teacher Abuse of Elementary Aged Students, Bullying, Aboriginal Education, Democratic, and Inclusive Education. Dr. Sharpe is Mohawk of the Bay of Quinte and is actively involved with several Aboriginal Organizations (INDSPIRE as a Teacher Mentor, Aboriginal Professionals Association of Canada, The Aboriginal Circle of Educators and Teach for Canada). In 2012 Dr. Sharpe was awarded Nipissing University's Distinguished Alumni Award. In 2015 Glen was awarded the Researcher Award with The Aboriginal Circle of Educators. The Aboriginal Professionals Asso- ciation of Canada highlighted Dr. Sharpe's work in their Recognizing Excellence Program in July of 2015. In March 2016, Dr. Sharpe was awarded The Governor General of Canada's Sovereign's Medal for his community engagement. In 2018, Glen was given the Chancellor's Award for Excel- lence in Teaching from Nipissing University. Play Dr. Glen Sharpe's Fireside Chat Video or have students read his story in the textbook. To debrief the video, ask the class the following questions: 1.What was Glen's educational journey like? 2.What does Glen say about his success? 3.What does Glen say was his "aha moment"? 4.How did Glen demonstrate perseverance throughout his life? 5.What obstacles did Glen face and how does he say he overcame them? 6.What does Glen say about his experience leaving home at a young age to attend school? What advice does he give to ease the transition? In his interview, Dr. Glen Sharpe discusses learning from failure. Inform the class that the next part of the lesson will focus on the concept of mindset.
