Lesson Three: James Harper 125 Overview You will investigate our community around the school to see if Mother Earth is being protected, sustained, and cared for. To do this you will be going on a community walk! A community walk is where you walk around where you live or where you go to school. After examining the community, you will create an individual Community Map. The map will out- line infrastructure, water resources, parks, community resources and more. You will explore what resources in your community protect Mother Earth. As well as what resources in your community might harm Mother Earth. After creating the community map, you will answer the Community Evaluation Questions below. Answer the questions on a separate piece of paper. Community Mapping: Create a Community Map of your community. You may need to walk around a few times. It's great to bring a clipboard to write or draw as you walk. On your map you will: 1.Include 20-30 dierent infrastructure, water resources, community resources, etc. Exam- ple: Houses, public buildings, schools, stores, trees, bodies of water, pools, garbage cans, recycling bins. 2.Make a map key and colour code each aspect. Example: Houses are coloured green. Water is coloured blue. Etc. 3.Include street and road names. Example of a Community Map: Community Evaluation Question Sheet Answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper. Write 5-8 sen- tences for each question. 1.What did you notice about things that are helping to protect the environment in your community? 2.What did you see that might be a sign of an issue in your community? 3.What are some actions you're, or your community, are already taking to protect the environment? 4.What are three things you would want to add to your community to make it more eco-friendly and better protect Mother Earth?
