General Lesson Plan One 5 ACTIVATE: WHAT IS THE "INDIGENOUS JOBS SECTOR" To begin this lesson, you will pose the question: "If you could have any career you wanted, what would it be?" Do a think-pair-share strategy with your students. Have students silently think of an answer for about a minute. Afterwards, have the students pair o to share their ideas. Provide each pair with a sticky note to write their ideas on. When they are ready to share, students will place their sticky note on the board. The teacher will then read out all the ideas. Next, pose the question: "Let us think about careers that impact Indigenous peoples, com- munities, and organizations. What careers do you think would fall under the umbrella of the "Indigenous Jobs Sector"? Have students silently think of their answers again. Pair students o to share their ideas and provide a second sticky note. Partners will write their answers and place their stick note on the board. The teacher will read out all of the ideas. Instruct students that their answers are all great ideas and share that there are in fact many jobs in the Indigenous Jobs Sector. Most jobs can fall under the Indigenous Jobs Sector! Using the Indigenous Job Opportunities Reproducible, share a few of the possible career and job opportu- nities that are available in the Indigenous jobs sector. ACQUIRE: FUTURE PATHWAYS FIRESIDE CHATS VIDEOS Watch a Fireside Chats video of your choosing. To showcase to the class an Indigenous career. There are many interesting videos to show students. Pick one from the list below to show the class as a whole-class example. Examples: •Activism/Education: Christine M'Lot, Teacher •Arts/Graphic Arts: Monique Aura Bedard, Art Maker •Athletes/Sports and Recreation: Richard Pellissier-Lush, Collegiate Athlete •Business and Entrepreneurship: Jessica Dumas, Life Coach •Community Development: Diane Roussin, Non-Profit Project Director •Computer Science: Dallas Wapash-Flett, Video Game Designer •Culture: Curtis Clearsky, Food Relations Coordinator •Elected Ocials: Yvonne Boyer, Senator •Entertainment: Dakota Bear, Hip-Hop Artist and Activist •Health and Science: Taylar Belanger, Traditional Herbalist •Skilled Trades: Raven Beardy, Pilot Debrief the video by asking the class the following questions. Ask students to raise their hands and call upon someone to answer: 1.What career category/job sector is this job from? 2.What was the job highlighted in the video? 3.What kind of education did this role model have? 4.What kind of duties did they have with their job? 5.What impact did this person have on Indigenous peoples and/or communities? Next, let students choose their own career from the Fireside Chats Series Reproducible list to explore.
