Lesson One: Jessica Dumas 160 APPLY: BELIEFS ABOUT MONEY WORKBOOK Hand out the "Beliefs About Money Workbook". Inform students that they are going to be working independently to explore the concept of money further and set financial goals for themselves. Students can complete the workbook pages in whatever order they choose. Cover Page: On the front of the workbook, students will draw images and write words represent- ing their outlook on money (5 marks). Learning About Money: On this page, students will go through four modules from the Finan- cial Consumer Agency of Canada and then summarize their learning in the space provided (20 marks). Link: https://www.canada.ca/en/financial-consumer-agency/services/financial-toolkit.html What Money Can and Cannot Buy: On the second page of the workbook, students will compare what money can and cannot buy. For example, they might write that money can buy expensive medical care but cannot buy health (10 marks). My Financial Goals: On the third page of the workbook, students will set 10 financial goals for themselves. Encourage students to think of short term, medium term and long-term goals (5 marks). ASSESS: The agree/disagree activity is a form of formative assessment. This activity will enable teachers and students to gauge their own and other's personal beliefs about money. The debriefing questions after Jessica's interview with Fireside Chats is a form of formative assessment. Teachers will be able to check what students took away from the video and make connections to the other parts of the lesson. The "Beliefs about Money" workbook is a form of summative assessment. Students can be assessed on level of completeness, accuracy of information from the Learning about Money page and thoughtfulness of answers. The workbook is out of 40 marks. TAKE STUDENT LEARNING FURTHER Have students create a future budget for themselves. Instruct students to complete internet research finding a suitable place to rent and a suitable method of transportation, plus a budget for food, clothing, entertainment etc. to determine how much money they will need to make per month and year to achieve the lifestyle they want. Have students submit a detailed budget including monthly income and expenses.
