Lesson One: Sateana Goupil 69 ACTIVATE: MENTORSHIP MINDMAP To begin the lesson, write the word MENTORSHIP in the middle of the white board. Instruct students to open their notebooks or to take a piece of paper out and that you will be working as a class to create a mind map about the word MENTORSHIP. As a class, come up with dierent subtopics, words, definitions, and connections. The size of the mind map is up to the teacher's discretion. He's lived in various places across Canada such as Quebec and Ontario, as well as in the United States in places such as Kansas and Connecticut. Sateana is an electrician and a former hockey player. He became interested in the trade when he was living in Wichita, Kansas, where his partner at the time had a family friend that worked at a construction electrical company. Sateana is still involved in hockey and coaches children. He feels he was very fortunate to be given opportunities to play on high-level teams and learn from excellent coaches during his career, so he felt it was important to give back. Start the video of Sateana Goupil's interview with Fireside Chats. To debrief the video, ask the class the following questions: 1.What was one of Sateana's major obstacles? How did he overcome this? 2.How is Sateana still involved with hockey? 3.How does mentorship and coaching help youth for their future? Since Sateana talked a lot about the importance of mentorship and coaching, students will do a rotational grati activity to summarize their prior knowledge and connect their ideas to the content they learned today through the mind mapping activity and knowledge they learned from Sateana Goupil's interview. Afterwards, students will apply their knowledge with a writing activity. APPLY: MENTORSHIP ROTATIONAL GRAFFITI AND SELF REFLECTION Students will perform a rotational grati to summarize the overall learning from today's lesson. Divide students into 5-6 teams with 3-4 students in each group. Each team will be designated to a dierent station to start the activity. Distribute a sheet of chart paper to each station and the same-coloured marker for each team member.
