Lesson One: Carson Roche 152 Lesson One: Carson Roche Activity: Indigenous Games CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut: •Aboriginal Studies Grades 10-12 •Environmental and Outdoor Education Grade 9 •Physical Education 10, 20, 30 British Columbia and Yukon: •Contemporary Indigenous Studies Grade 12 •Physical and Health Education 9 •Physical and Health Education 10 •Active Living 11 •Outdoor Education 12 •Active Living 12 Ontario: •First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Studies Grades 9-12 •Health and Physical Education 9-12 DURATION 1-2 hours OVERVIEW Throughout this lesson, students will learn about traditional Indigenous games, including the North American Indian Games and the Arctic Winter Games. Students will hear from Indigenous sports role model Carson Roche, who utilized sports to deal with the challenges of growing up in a small community and now travels across Canada to isolated communities to teach about traditional Indigenous games! Finally, students will have the opportunity to play some Indigenous games and discuss the purpose of each. MATERIALS •Computer/Projector/Internet Connection •Materials to play Indigenous games: Sticks (one for each student), ball, string, tape, rocks or bean bags Sport and Recreation ACTIVATE: VIDEO CLIPS To begin this lesson, ask students which sports events they watch. Answers might include NBA games, NHL games, NFL games, community sports events, the Olympics etc. Ask students to raise their hands if they've ever watched the North American Indigenous Games. What about the Arctic Winter Games? Inform the group that today the focus of the lesson will be on Indigenous games. Show students this short video clip describing the history of the North American Indigenous Games: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lB5-EBTzVc Next, show students this short video clip describing the 2020 Arctic Winter Games: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Eg2-TrLf54 Alternatively, teachers can choose other videos to watch showcasing the North American Indige- nous Games and the Arctic Winter Games. Teachers are encouraged to debrief the videos, asking students what they think and which events they would be interested in participating in. Lesson Plan
