Nyle Johnston | Founder of Miigizi Creations It was always a dream of mine to become a full-time artist. This Fellowship provided me with an opportunity to learn about the steps and risks involved in transforming this dream into reality. I have learned about aspects of Intellectual Property and how I need to protect myself as an artist when I make agreements with clients/customers/partners. I have also learned about the level of discipline that is required to be a social entrepreneur along with the importance of networking. I hope to be able to expand on my knowledge and capabilities as I grow Miigizi Creations in the future and am grateful to all the team members at TakingITGlobal who have shared their ideas, skills and experiences with me. Miigizi Creations is a sustainable social impact arts practice that benefits my community. At the core of Miigizi Creations is spreading Anishinaabe Teachings through paintings, line drawings and community mural projects as a way to share an understanding of Indigenous world views and medicine through imagery. Alex Martenstyn | Founder of The BAR Institute I had a number of preconceptions about taxes and general operations that were not accurate. Discussions with some of the [guest mentors] helped bring clarity to knowing how the business could work, and how I would balance the organization myself, at least temporarily, while continuing to develop my career as a professional musician. Their experiences in technology, education, law, and finance helped me find a path to more detailed data management, scheduling, and results tracking for my participants, all for free at our current size. The BAR Institute is a grassroots, youth-led, accessible music curriculum bridging the gap between community programming, post-secondary level materials, and exclusively elite mentorship leading to professional performances. 14
