Arts Alive with the National Arts Centre The National Arts Centre is proud to offer virtual workshops in music, dance, and theatre through Arts Alive, its learning and engagement hub, and in partnership with Connected North. Teachings artists who facilitate these workshops come from a variety of Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultural backgrounds. Workshops are available in English and French for students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Topics vary widely, but all seek to deepen students experience with the performing arts while making important cross-curricular connections to subjects such as literacy/language arts and social studies, and developing 21st-century competencies like creative thinking, communication, and collaboration.. Here are just a few examples! The National Arts Centre also helps to organize special concerts and events with renowned Indigenous musicians. See more in "Events" on p. 107 46 Songwriting Ila Barker Ila Barker is a singer-songwriter of mixed Anishinaabe and settler heritage, hailing from the Manitoban prairies. Known for her warm, honeyed voice and rich storytelling, Ila has captivated audiences at national festivals and has released chart-topping singles. She remains deeply connected to her community through workshops and mentorship programs. In this residency, students will learn the fundamentals of songwriting and write their own song(s). It is recommended to book 2-3 sessions. Voice Acting Omari Newton Learn how to bring characters to life using only your voice! When you watch an animated movie or series, it's easy to forget that there are people behind the voices of your favourite characters. That's all thanks to incredible voice actors like Omari Newton! Omari is an award-winning professional actor, writer, director, and a senior instructor at The Vancouver Film School. His voice credits include Marvel's Black Panther, Corvus in Netflix's Dragon Prince, Nate on Corner Gas Animated and Jefferson on Max Steel. In this workshop, Omari will guide students in finding their inner cartoon!
