10) Personal Growth & Learning We scheduled weekly volunteer-led study sessions in which several youth either obtained their GED's and/or upgraded their skills and courses for the purposes of attending post-secondary institutions [...] Youth reported that their confidence and ability to learn increased largely due to our program! The boost in confidence levels and having our local youth know their worth. Project Activities & Impacts Not only did participants get a chance to learn from women from different career fields, but also women from various countries. In our increasingly globalized world, these opportunities to connect with people from different parts of the globe is vital, as it improves our understanding of how the world works and our place within it as well [...] so many girls said that they were incredibly inspired by the conversations we had during our panel... The books read by the book club participants are written by black authors and will focus on black narratives across the world. Through these literary works, the participants will be able to relate to the characters and reflect over a variety of themes relevant to their Black Canadian experience such as coming of age, racism, discrimination, identity, colourism, feminism, love, relationships, family, friendship and activism. Also, as a group formed solely of young black women, the participants are able to open up in ways they are unable to when in white spaces and talk about racial as well as gender issues they have faced and how it has affected their conceptions of themselves and of the world around them. The variety of workshops allow the participants to learn more about black history and culture and to discover new facets of the black experience they were never exposed to before like writing, art, dance, hair care, social justice, poetry, entrepreneurship etc. Through the discussions, activities and events organized, the participants will feel empowered and supported and are encouraged to be innovators, creators, and actors in creating a successful future for themselves... Section 2: "Threads That Thrive": taught 2SLGBTQ+ individuals how to alter their clothing to best represent their gender expression "Girls Night Mental Health Support": created a 12 week program to help youth connect & learn new tools to support their personal wellness and mental health "Braiding Workshop for Youth": hosted a workshop to learn about Indigenous hair braiding & its cultural significance Project Leaders designed projects that facilitated meaningful growth & learning for all those involved in the project.
