11) Food Security My project was operating a food and resource pantry based in my school that reached out to my school and community [...] We used grant money to buy a variety of non-perishable food items such as canned soups and vegetables, rice, peanut butter, tuna, dried pasta and noodles, pasta sauce, and much more [...] We set up a Google Form for people to anonymously fill out orders, with the option of picking up at our school, or having their order delivered. We also have open pantry days on Thursdays at lunch, where students can walk in and take anything they need [...] At first the pantry was set up only to address food insecurity within my school, Cole Harbour District High School. With the platform we've been able to create with grant money, we have managed to reach schools all through the Cole Harbour family of schools, all the way down to elementary school level. By applying an anti-oppressive and intersectional lens, we examined how food insecurity affects marginalized communities - namely low-income, diasporic and international Asian students, within OCADu. With cultural and language barriers in addition to the rising cost of living in Toronto, food insecurity has disproportionately affected immigrants and international students. By providing culturally specific food supports and resources, we provided a sense of familiarity and worked to destigmatize receiving aid for diasporic and international Asian students and community members. I hosted a cooking class workshop for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth to learn a traditional Moose Stew recipe from an elder. This recipe consisted of specific ingredients that would be used to cook in the woods! Our guest Marilyn John helped facilitate her recipe as she guided the participants through each step until the final product was complete. "Chicken Farming Training": led a team of youth in building a chicken coop & learning about livestock rearing at a local sustainable farm "Urban Farm": created a microgreens & hydroponic system to sustainably grow organic produce for the community "Pies for the Community": purchased & delivered homemade hand pies to the community fridge & shelter Project Leaders implemented projects that increased the availability of and, access to food in their communities, thereby addressing the food insecurity experienced by many.
