F I S H S K I N T A N N I N G A T H O M E 195 I have friends and family who go fishing save their skins for me. This is a great way to get a variety of local species. You can try asking local fishmongers for their discarded fish skin, I have had a lot of luck with local sushi restaurants who have an abundance of salmon skin that gets thrown out. Freeze your skins right away until the day you will tan them. If you have lots, sorting them is nice so you can take as many as you want, otherwise toss them in a bag and freeze! It is important to remember that fish skins need to always remain cold! STEP ONE: MAKE YOUR TEA Bring a pot of water to boil, put 5 black tea bags and a spoon of salt (salt is openly needed on day 1) in and let cool to room temperature Each day you will refresh your tea with a new batch and we will slowly increase the amount of tea each day. Day 1: 5 tea bags Day 2: 10 tea bags Day 3: 15 tea bags Day 4-6+: 20 tea bags STEP TWO: FLESHING AND SCALING Using your spoon, flesh out the inside of the skin. Ensure that you get as much of the thin, silvery parts on the skin off as possi- ble. Flip over the skin and use the backside of your butterknife to scrape off the scales. Scrape from tail to head and be gentle to keep the scale pockets intact, as they give fish leather it's beautiful texture!
