A M B E R S A N D Y 194 "Fish skin tanning at home [is] really fun and really easy to do." In this lesson, you'll see how Amber tans fish skins to make leather, to use for art or all sorts of projects. In Amber's Create to Learn tutorial she tans perch skins donated by some ice fishermen who didn't need them. This tutorial is updating using the tea method which she has recently developed and recommends. What you need • Fish skin, any kind will work. Raw skins can be frozen until ready to use! • Black tea bags • Dish soap • Spoon and butterknife • Salt • Glass jar/container • Bowl • Tea towel • Oil (any kind works including olive, vegetable, neatsfoot, margarine and more!) Tip: Take fresh fish skins and package them in-between parchment paper or wax paper for easy freezing. That way, you can grab as many as you want to use at a time. SOURCING FISH SKINS To source your skins, think sustainably. If you are planning on cooking fish for dinner, you can skin the fish before you cook it.
