Social Studies & Indigenous Studies Join fish skin tanner and educator Cheryl McLean as she shares her Fish Skin Tanning Cheryl McLean journey into reviving an almost-lost skill. Originally from Northern BC and of mixed European and Beaver Cree ancestry, now living in the Yukon, Cheryl first encountered fish skin tanning about five years ago—and it quickly became her passion. In this session, she'll share the history, cultural connections, and step-by- step process of turning fish skins into strong, beautiful material. Cheryl will show the students some of the crafts she makes with finished hides. vibrant traditions and customs of Chinese New Year! Celebrated in late January– February, Chinese New Year (also known as the Spring Festival ) marks the beginning of spring and is the most important holiday in Chinese culture. This session will feature captivating storytelling, including the legendary tale of the Nian beast, which explains the origins of Chinese New Year, and the story of the Great Race that led to the creation of the Chinese zodiac and its animals. Discover the colourful ways Chinese New Year is celebrated, and get creative by crafting your own lucky red sign to decorate your home for the next Chinese New Year! To wrap up the fun, you'll learn a few basic Chinese New Year greetings and phrases.
