Civics How can we take part in federal elections? Students learn many ways to Election Simulation Toolkit Elections Canada take part in elections including voting for a candidate, joining a political party, working as an election officer, running as a candidate, or volunteering on a campaign. In this whole-class simulation, students identify issues in their school or community that they care about. Next, they work together in various roles to develop a campaign aimed at tackling the issue. Finally, they vote for the candidate who they think had the best campaign, using authentic election materials. An Elections Canada educator will guide you and your students through the federal electoral process from campaigning to counting. Students then reflect on their own participation in our democracy. Elections Canada also offers Choosing Our Mascot, Mapping Electoral Districts, Voting Rights Through Time, and more. Our guides will introduce students to the stories of human rights upstanders and explore the strengths they used to create change. We'll help students discover their own strengths and capacity to become human rights upstanders in their communities. Be An Upstander Canadian Museum of Human Rights Learn what it takes to become an upstander for human rights. The Canadian Museum of Human Rights also offers Dignity and Rights, My Rights Our Rights, and more. Donna Kisoun is Inuvialuit and Gwich'in, retired from a long career in Preparing for Leadership: Visioning Donna Kisoun community and policy development. She has worked with councils, corporations, and governments supporting policy change and Indigenous rights. In this second session of the two-part series, Donna will lead students through a variety of visioning exercises to develop a plan for the future. This will involve taking a look at their community and what they might want to see or improve, further exploring their passions, and goal-setting exercises to identify clear next steps. We will explore post-secondary options and think about the skills we might want to build to become an advocate, be heard, and create action. In this session, students will finish the end product of the series, which is a written plan to move forward. 81
