Integrating Connected North
When I book sessions that are not hands-on, I try to connect them to the units that I am
covering in class so students will have some familiarity with the topic. For example, one
of my English classes learns about traditional storytelling and legends. I was able to
arrange a session with David Finkle who played amazing music, and shared his hunting
stories and traditional stories with the class.
Many of my students appreciate and have an interest in music and hunting, so David's
sessions were engaging. We enjoyed his session so much that my students asked to
feature him in our class magazine project. We created a Connected North spotlight
session article just so we could virtually meet with him again. To prepare for this, we
brainstormed interview questions. After the session, we had a class discussion on
everything we learned from him and decided which information we should include in
our magazine article.
The first edition of our class magazine
was funded by the Samuel Connected
North Youth Leadership Fund. David
Finkle's article is in the second edition
still being edited.
