Most of my students are shy and quiet when interacting with the instructor. I often interject a question or answer to keep the conversation going; it is something I will adjust when preparing students for these sessions. I need to teach students how to participate in virtual meetings because online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic didn't look the same in our remote community as in urban areas. Between internet capacity within the community, limited computer access at home, and many high school students simply not participating, students are unfamiliar with the expectations of virtual meetings and how to conduct themselves. For my older students, I have included participation and contributions during the sessions as part of their grades. I have also created exit passes that students complete at the end of class to provide feedback on their learning from the sessions. Following up after sessions, I often refer to the discussion and new learning when teaching activities in class that allow students to use the knowledge they acquired from the sessions.
