Jennifer Hafenbrack Bella Bella Community School Bella Bella, British Columbia Introduction Yáu, my name is Jennifer Hafenbrack, and I am blessed to live and work in the unceded homelands of the Heiltsuk Nation who have been here since time immemorial. I've been teaching for 17 years and have taught in Canada, Qatar, and Sweden, working with various cultures and curricula. My teaching in Canada includes Ontario, Nunavut, and now British Columbia. I live and teach within the Heiltsuk Nation in Bella Bella, located along the central coast in a region known as the Great Bear Rainforest. Bella Bella is a remote community of approximately 1,500 people with limited access through plane and ferry service only. I've been teaching at Bella Bella Community School for seven years, starting in elementary school as a grade 3/4 teacher. I switched to high school in my second year to teach Home Economics in grades 8-12. In this capacity, I have experienced firsthand the need for flexibility in Indigenous schools when offering courses to students. As a result, I have also taught Outdoor Education 12, Careers 10 and 12, Entrepreneurship 9 and 12, Tourism 12, modified programs for English First Peoples 10 and 11, and Youth in Trades 11. I have also created courses and designed curricula for Baking & Pastry Arts; International Cuisine, and On Your Own Foods, where students obtain the necessary skills to cook and provide for themselves beyond graduation.
