Amy Ing
East Three Elementary School
Inuvik, Northwest Territories
Introduction
Uvlumi and Drin Gwiinizh, my name is Amy Ing, and I am a grade 5 teacher at East Three
Elementary in my second year of teaching. I am grateful to be teaching in an Inuvialuit
and Gwich'in Indigenous community in Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Through Connected
North we are able to expose students to local Indigenous artists such as Priscilla Boulay
and Brian Kowichuk from Inuvik, who have demonstrated to students the importance of
art in their cultural identity.
The importance of local connections is invaluable in students' recognizing, connecting,
and relating to their identity and local community. It further allows students to see
themselves in their work. Besides Indigenous art, we have also participated in a variety of
workshops related to the curriculum - from owl pellet dissection to drugs and alcohol to
edible water pods to solar cars to making fry bread and beading and sewing. The variety
of workshops available is incredible, and I highly recommend seeking Connected North as
a resource to solidify, hook, and further enhance students' learning.
