6) Physical Activity & Recreation We hosted three group bike rides for women, trans, femme and non-binary people in Halifax. The purpose of these rides was to provide a space for people typically less represented in the cycling world to meet other people and gain confidence in their cycling. The Capital Sports Basketball League is an initiative that provided young men in Ottawa with the opportunity to play the sport they love and connect with their peers. Open gyms have not been readily available and as we navigate the various challenges presented by the pandemic it is important to consider the toll it has taken on the mental and physical health of various communities. Basketball is a great way to stay active and relieve stress; it also allows people to socialize [...] The league helped adult men reconnect with their love for basketball, as well as network, create new friendships, and reconvene with old friends that they have not seen since the pandemic. Project Activities & Impacts This project came at a great time as the summer was just beginning and any participants who were facing social isolation got an opportunity to engage with others and try a recreational activity. The head space of all participants was positive and they reported they are looking forward to engaging in more physical activities and socializing more as the weather got nicer. I think this activity achieved helping these youth in the community socialize as well as encouraging physical activity and overall wellness. Section 2: "Bike Repair Co-op": created a bike workshop where community can learn, share & fix bikes together "Alt Route Accessible Skatepark": facilitated an accessible skateboarding camp for youth with visual impairments "Youth Sports Skills": purchased sports equipment for low income families so they can participate in community sport Project Leaders were innovative in creating projects that addressed the need for all individuals to have access to safe physical activity & recreation options in their community.
