he Embassy of Imagination
(EoI), an arts program for the
community's youth in Cape
Dorset, organized a celebratory and
colourful parade complete with banners,
costumes, huge cardboard sculptures,
and involving 100 youth who would
participate in the procession. Samantha
Noolook was selected to coordinate the
costumes, organize the volunteers, and
feed everyone breakfast and lunch as
they prepared for the afternoon parade.
Students from the Peter Pitseolak High
School made most of the artwork and
costumes that regaled the streets of Cape
Dorset one August afternoon. With the
support of artist facilitators, from the EoI,
they created elaborate art installations
including "tarpkas," which are parkas
made out of snowmobile tarps. They
even created a giant copper snowmobile,
entirely made from materials from the
town's old power plant. Students of all
ages walked from the high school, to the
elementary school, downtown, and back
up to the school in a loop.
"Many were surprised at how many
people showed up and were excited to
see everyone come together," reflects
Samantha. "Lots of kids had a fun time,
people were laughing and smiling, and
people watching on the street were
amazed."

A special thank you to Embassy of

grant opportunity with Samantha to make
this project possible.
