P A T R I C K S H A N N O N 30 LESSON 1: INTERVIEWING YOURSELF YOUR NARRATIVE In this series, you will learn how to create a short film that introduces yourself and your stories to the world. This is a great way to self-promote, especially as artists, creators or public figures. This tutorial uses cell phone video footage because it doesn't matter what equipment you use, it matters how you use it. WICKED INTERVIEW Here's what you need to think about when you're going to interview yourself for your video: The right tools. Use the voice memo app to record your voice. The right place. Find somewhere quiet, avoiding noisy appliances like heating units and refrigerators. Closets are a great choice because they absorb sound and help you avoid the "empty" sound. Use your equipment the right way. Hold the microphone 12 inches from your face. Any closer, you will risk plosives. Don't stress about mistakes. You can always take the best takes and edit things later. Drink Up! Hydration is key to avoiding icky, sticky noises. When you haven't had enough water, your saliva gets sticky. Chugging water, right before recording isn't any better because it just gives you a moist mouth. Drink lots of water about one to two hours before recording to stop your mouth from getting sticky or too moist. Add energy Don't let yourself sound monotone, let your voice get higher and lower. You don't want to sound boring. Now for the part people worry about the most… what do you say? Questions to ask yourself: • Who are you? • How'd you get started? • What inspires you? • What is your favorite part of doing what you do? PLOSIVES: bursts of air that hit the microphone when you pronounce P's or B's.
