A C T O R S K I T 21 1. Practice the script out loud. It's different than practicing in your head. 2. Get a reader. Find a friend who will read the other character's lines in the scene to help you practice. 3. Dress the part. Read the breakdown and dress accordingly. Alternately, dress as neutrally as possible, try not to wear any bright colors or any big logos. Keep the focus on your performance and off of what you're wearing. 4. Put your best foot forward. Try not to wear noisy shoes that too will draw attention away from your performance. HAVE FUN. The more prepared you are, the more fun you will have. The director might have differ- ent ideas when you arrive so if you're prepared and loose, you can roll with changes in direction with more grace. Now, get ready to nail your audition! Break a leg! LESSON 2: HOW TO DO A SELF-TAPE You might not always be able to audition in person. A self-tape lets you record your audition for if you are in a different city or unavailable to attend in person. You can use a company to produce your self-tape or you can do it at home. Here's how to make the most of your self-tape: FIND A WALL. A plain wall with nothing hanging on it works best. You might think making the back- ground more interesting would be better but that's not the case. Too much clutter, like, this, can be distracting:
