P A T R I C K K E L L Y 104 LESSON 2: GEAR: THE RUN DOWN This lesson focuses on the very basics of recording gear so you can get a sense of what you might need to record your music and why. Rudegang Entertainment came up with its current gear through trial and error over the years. "It's important to make sure that we are recording the best quality sound possible on our end to make sure that our friends who mix and master our music have the best opportunity possible to make our songs sound great." Rudegang uses: • Shure microphone • Kaotica Eyeball (which includes a pop filter and features additional soundproofing) • Rycote Shockmount • Good Mic Stand • 2 pairs of headphones (one for the artist and one for the recording engineer) • M-Box Mixer (simple two channel) Gear can be expensive but there are ways to save money. MONEY SAVING TIPS Search Kijiji or FB Marketplace for gently used gear or borrow from people who own equipment you need. If you can't find gear used on the cheap, these are some tips to get the best gear at the best price: • Save up • Finance • Shop at your local music store • Do your research Doing your research looks like: • Asking local music store staff who can be a great resource • researching product competitors • Reading customer reviews • Talking to music professionals in your community • Watching YouTube videos that test the product Where will you start your hunt for gear?
