MICROPHONES "While I am certainly no expert on the technology or science behind microphones, experience has taught me that quality absolutely makes a difference. There is absolutely no shame in whatever quality of mic you choose to record with. But if you're going to go through the fuss of building yourself a great booth with sound quality in mind, I highly recommend investing in a top quality microphone to record with if all goes well, your investment will eventually be able to pay for itself." The shockmount and microphone stand are pieces of equipment that can be easy to overlook but may be really important depending on the type of microphone you have. One of Patrick's early missteps was overloading the weight limits of the shockmount. That meant more foreign sound was getting into the recordings because the new mic was too heavy for the shockmount. A loose mic stand also had to be replaced to dial in on clearer sound. To recap: Get the best quality microphone you can on donation, trade or finance and pay attention to the details because they can significantly impact your recording quality. " Things like foam, a pop filter, shockmount , and a good sturdy mic stand can make the difference between a good clean recording or a muddled recording." LESSON 4: SOFTWARE AND LEARNING THE ROPES This lesson focuses on software and music recording options. DAWS, or Digital Audio Workstations are a type of audio recording software that lets you connect to and interact with mixers and instruments to create a professional recording. There are plenty of choices depending on your budget, recording needs and experience. Because software will have key differences between them, research is really important. You might want to start with Reaper or Audacity, which are free to get yourself started before you invest in an expensive DAW.
