24 FAC I L I TAT I N G C O N N E C T E D L E A R N I N G What happens when you bring together the Centre for Global Education, The Canadian Commission for UNESCO, Ocean Wise, Polar Bears International, and a number of strategically chosen partner organizations to mobilize and engage over 100,000 youth? The world's largest synthesis of youth education and action. In preparation for the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference, over 10,000 youth from 43 countries undertook work that would ultimately become the Global Youth White Paper. To save our planet and home, their calls to action plot a way forward out of the climate crisis. These inspired youth sketched the beauty of a more sustainable future and the action to make it a reality. #Decarbonize is a school-based project that brings together K-12 students and educators, from 43 countries, across the Global North and Global South, in eight months of ongoing dialogue on climate resilience, climate justice, and climate mitigation. Under the moral patronage of UNESCO, students engage in blog posts, discussion boards, art submissions, podcasts, and live, interactive video conferences, to respond to a series of collaborative, project-based activities that promote whole-school local and global climate action and advocacy. The #Decarbonize project culminates in a youth-authored report, synthesizing the thoughts, opinions, and actions of participating students. It is presented by national lead students (1 per country) at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP). Produced and delivered annually, the #Decarbonize report is the world's largest youth-authored synthesis of student education, opinion, and action on climate change.
