75 Teacher Professional Development OTHER SESSION IDE A S: • Understanding IEPs (and How to Use Them in the Classroom) with Learn Different • Using Mail Merge to Communicate with Parents with Katie Burch WELL- BEING FR A MEWORK with TakingITGlobal Staff This session works with school staff in helping to create a positive school environment for students, staff, and community members. Throughout the presentation, participants will learn about harmful and helpful ways we interact with students and community members, leading to discussions on what your school can do to create a more positive school environment that is both welcoming to students. WORK ING WITH A TR AUM A LENS with Janine Lawford Janine Lawford MSW, RSW has been included as part of the Hincks Dellcrest team to work on this project because of her clinical experience and expertise, her experience working in remote Indigenous communities, and her 15 years of experience working within various schools. She has worked at the Hincks- Dellcrest Centre as a therapist, trainee supervisor, and instructor, co-leading both a trauma seminar and a trauma- focused assessment and treatment team. SUPPORTING STUDENTS WITH SUBSTA NCE USE PROBLEMS with Learn Different Given that students spend a good chunk of time at school, it becomes important to provide educators with the adequate knowledge and tools to identify the troubled students and help them get the right support. This workshop will provide educators with background information on substance use including risk and protective factors and warning signs that a student is having trouble. Various strategies will be provided to guide educators helping students connect with the right support. Suggested for teachers of Grade 7-12 SUPPORTING STUDENTS FACING A DV ERSIT Y with Learn Different How do we support the most vulnerable students in our classrooms? This workshop offers a framework for understanding the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) on the social, emotional, behavioral, and academic development of at-risk students. Participants will learn and discuss strategies that support learning and stress management and assist in creating classroom spaces that can support at-risk students in developing resilience.
