Indigenous Role Models INDIGENOUS ROLE MODEL with Waukomaun Pawis Waukomaun Pawis is an Ojibwe from Wasauksing First Nation who works with TakingITGlobal as a Connected North Education Coordinator and as a freelance entrepreneur as a videographer. Waukomaun is a role model in his community and has been in several leadership positions in his youth to create opportunities for his community. Through this session you will learn from Waukomaun's stories and experiences of how you can be the catalyst for change in your community, how conditions in his community and home have affected him to make better and healthy choices. POLITIC AL ENG AGEMENT A S AN AC T TO CRE ATE SOCIAL CHANGE with Nigit'stil Norbert Nigit'stil Norbert ran to become a Member of the Legislative Assembly in the last Northwest Territories Election at the age of 30. Her spirited campaign garnered attention from across the North. This session will discuss some of Nigit'stil's personal insights when it comes to being a young, politically engaged, Indigenous woman in her community and territory. This session will look at ways that youth can become socially and politically engaged with issues that directly affect them within their lives and communities. Looking to examples of Indigenous youth from across Canada as case studies of how one person raising their voice can raise the voices of all Indigenous peoples. INFLUENCE & LE ADERSHIP THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA with Dakota Bear & Casey Desjarlais In this session we discuss the importance of leadership amongst our youth. Times are changing and with the technology we have today it is much easier to connect with each other. The more young minds we have inspiring others the more we are able to build each other up. The idea is to encourage youth to post and engage with more progressive and positive content to counter the cyber bullying and negativity that flood our social media platforms daily. GLOBAL PERSPEC TIVES with Levi Marshall Levi Marshall is a 19-year-old Mi'kmaq from the community of Membertou, First Nation, in Nova Scotia, studying Film Production and Journalism at Ryerson University. Do you have an interest in global cultures and travel? Want to learn more about different cultures from people WHO ARE ACTUALLY from those countries? Toronto is the MOST diverse city in the entire world, and some of Levi's friends love sharing about their own countries. In this session, students will be introduced to four students from different regions in the world, and they will share with you their country's location, languages, culture, and topography through recorded video-interviews. Levi and students will compare and contrast their own geographical locations and culture, to that of the speakers in the videos.
