10 Active listening Listen to understand not to respond. We need more spaces for our voices to be heard without interruption or interrogation. Asking questions Inquire about things that you do not understand, but be respectful in what you are asking about. Be open to learning and unlearning Recognize that many of the ways you have been taught to understand Indigenous peoples and the history of Canada has been a strategic tool of colonization. Keep things confidential Sharing our stories with you is a gift. Think carefully about what information we trust you with and what you do with it. Recognize your power and privilege Everyone carries different advantages according to aspects of their identity. This includes the colour of your skin, your sexual and gender orientation, the socio-economic class you fall into, and your physical abilities (among others). Do the work to understand the privilege you carry and the ways in which this contributes to the oppression of others. Take up less space Resist the urge to always be the one speaking and giving ideas especially in situations or places that are supposed to be for us. Sometimes the most supportive thing you can do is to pass the mic and let others be heard and seen in ways that usually are not afforded to them. Be conscious of trying to prove yourself Being an accomplice to our communities does not come with a badge or membership card. Do the work everyday with awareness that you will always have something new to learn and focusing attention on yourself takes away from our voices. H ere are some of the ways that we believe people can be better accomplices to our communities. We will be elaborating on some of these recommendations throughout this report, however, we feel as though it is important to offer a range of suggestions here to help frame the discussion.
