Divya Dey, Ontario BIWOC in the Outdoors Divya is encouraging racialized women and non-binary people to reconnect with nature, many for the first time. Through her initiative, she provided an immersive outdoor experience complete with canoeing, archery, rock climbing, and participant-led nature walks. For participants, these activities removed financial barriers, built confidence and created a sense of belonging among a community of people who feel underrepresented or excluded in traditional outdoor spaces. BIWOC in the Outdoors was a space where racialized women could take up space in nature and feel safe, joyful, and seen doing so. Reflecting on her personal experience as a racialized woman and activist, leading this initiative and participating in the outdoor activities reminded Divya of the importance of rest, community, and just being. The Sprout Ideas Fellowship gave her the confidence and encouragement to take her long-held ideas and finally bring them to life. Looking ahead, Divya is motivated to use sustainable funding methods so her initiatives can thrive long-term without burnout or instability. Leading this initiative taught me that impact isn't always measured in numbers — sometimes it's felt in shared laughter around a campfire, or in the quiet courage of someone trying something new for the first time.
