Sandtanna Beaton, Prince Edward Island Lead Like Her Sandtanna started Lead Like Her to address the lack of safety skills among youth in Prince Edward Island. She envisioned a future where young people could feel strong, secure and empowered to shape their futures. The project started as self-defence workshops for youth but soon expanded to include school-aged empowerment workshops, community speaking engagements and building intergenerational connections between youth and seniors. Collectively, these sessions engaged 400+ participants of all ages! Many participants expressed that the activities helped them reconnect with their own strength, both physically and emotionally, and provided tools to apply in their daily lives. This is only the beginning for Sandtanna, who plans to explore additional funding to expand into other provinces. She hopes to deepen her leadership and facilitation skills to create safe, supportive spaces where participants can explore confidence, boundaries, and self-advocacy at their own pace. Participating in the Sprout Ideas Fellowship and funding Lead Like Her showed me that leadership is not defined by perfection but by the willingness to show up, share, and create opportunities for others to grow.
