Jessica Arychuk, Manitoba ARTS & CULTURE Jessica envisions a world where low-income, Indigenous youth can feel supported and proud to share their stories - one pair of shoes at a time. This project builds on the idea of the late rapper, community leader and Jessica's fiancé, Cayden Carfrae. When Cayden was young, he was low-income and wasn't able to afford new shoes, which affected his confidence. This memory led Cayden and Jessica to want to give back to their community. By providing Indigenous youth in Winnipeg with shoes and art supplies, they hope more kids can share their cultural identities and feel empowered. Working with an Indigenous artist, Kehlani Jennifer, Indigenous youth customized their shoes to celebrate their culture and interests and show off their creativity. Jessica will carry on honouring Cayden's legacy and spirit by expanding the program and allowing even more Indigenous youth to feel confident to walk forward in life wearing their stories with pride! Cayden's Shoe Project The response from the community was way larger than I anticipated. This was another confirmation of the pride and love I have for my fiancé and his visions and ideas. I want to keep this initiative going for the youth and to continue my fiancé's legacy.
