Fatima Janneh, Quebec Beauty and Business Engineering Society (BABES) Fatima is connecting cosmetics and commerce. She aims to help others build their scientific literacy, lab skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the beauty industry through formulation development, ingredient testing, and tours of cosmetic labs. Many of the participants weren't aware of how much patience and experimentation were needed to develop some of their favourite everyday products. One participant mentioned that after learning about formulation science at a BABES workshop, they wanted to pursue cosmetic science internships. This project successfully helped others understand the creativity, technical knowledge, and entrepreneurship skills required in this industry. Fatima will continue creating initiatives that sit at the intersection of science and entrepreneurship - particularly for industries that are not traditionally thought of among STEM students. Participating in the Sprout Ideas Fellowship pushed me to think beyond passion and focus on planning, budgeting, measurable impact, and long-term sustainability. I plan to keep deepening my knowledge in cosmetic science and product development while providing spaces where students can explore non-traditional STEM pathways with credibility and confidence.
