Healing Through Language & Culture Willis Janvier From La Loche, SK, Willis is a member of Clearwater River Dene Nation and the founder and host of the Dene Yati Podcast, the first podcast in the Denesuline language. Passionate about his Dene language and culture, Willis uses his charismatic and vibrant personality to advocate for mental health and holistic wellness. In this session, he will share his personal journey of overcoming addiction and the role of language and culture in his recovery. The storytelling-based session will include time for a Q&A. Check out Willis's Fireside Chat! Hunter and Gatherers Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre The Squamish and Lil'wat Nations, as caretakers of their land, have deep cultural connections to it. In this tour, students will learn how these communities sustained themselves through hunting, fishing, and gathering, using food as medicine. Topics include Salish fishing techniques, the hunter's role, medicinal plant uses, traditional cooking, food preservation like curing and smoking, and spiritual connections to the environment and animals, including sustainability ceremonies. Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre also offers What We Treasure, Dreamcatchers, and more. My curiosity drives me. Find what you love. I'm meant to help people; maybe this is where I'm supposed to help people. I don't know. I'm still trying to figure that out. But I think I've found something I really enjoy. For a lot of young people, - find something you enjoy. Experiment and try something new, and if it doesn't work, go and move on. Social Studies & History 84 Explore Egypt - Mummification Museum of Vancouver Explore the process and significance of mummification in Ancient Egypt, delving into the cultural, religious, and historical contexts that shaped this practice. This session will challenge students to use their critical thinking skills to gain a deeper understanding of contemporary issues related to ethics, museum collecting, and the repatriation of artifacts. Students will develop perspective on how ancient practices influence modern debates about cultural heritage and the responsibilities of museums today.
