The Wishing Tree Pamela Devonshire Meet author Pamela Devonshire, a member of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte. Pamela's three-book series is inspired and connected by significant Mohawk people, legends and places. This second book explores the tale of a magical Sugar Maple 'Wishing Tree'. The story encourages the reader to think about what is really important in their lives and asks, "what would you wish for?'. After reading excerpts of the book, Pamela will lead students in creating a wooden wishing tree ornament. Literacy 78 Storytime - The Boy with Flowers in His Hair Rebecca Talbot As Rabecca guides children through The Boy with Flowers in His Hair, a story about empathy, students feel like they are part of the story, empowering them to make a difference in one another's daily experience. As a group, students will learn a four beat drumming rhythm stressing the downbeat. The rhythm represents the song our heart sings when we are happy. After the story, Rabecca will guide the students in a simple paper flower craft. Self-expression will be encouraged and the exploration of creativity in visual art. Brandon Mitchell also offers Making a Comic Strip: Panel Creation, Author Talks, and Guided Comic Character Drawing. Maika Harper is an Inuit Canadian actress and model born and raised in the Arctic. She briefly studied classical theatre in the BFA program at the University of Windsor before starring in APTN's hit dramatic comedy Mohawk Girls as Anna. Maika also released a children's book in 2019 called The Walrus and the Caribou, based on a traditional Inuit story passed forward orally for generations in the South Baffin region of Nunavut. Maika will speak about her inspiration for the book, read parts of the book to students, and will be ready to answer any student questions. The Walrus and the Caribou Maika Harper Brandon is the founder of Birch Bark Comics and creator of the Sacred Circles comic series, which draws on his Mi'kmaq heritage. In this workshop, Brandon will connect with students to explore the process of character development for fiction writing. Students will explore different styles of drawing for faces and body construction. Students will explore the different things to consider when creating a character through mind map exercises and by building a bio/profile of their character. Character Development Brandon Mitchell
