Join us for a tour of the Unikkaarvik Visitor Centre in Iqaluit, Nunavut. The centre features many beautiful displays of Inuit art, artifacts and dioramas of Arctic life (including many Arctic animals and scenery). This session will provide a general introduction to Inuit culture and Nunavut history, and can be adapted for many different grade levels. You may request to learn more about animals of the territory as well as Inuit legends & stories. We use the moose hide pin as a way to share our medicine and to call people into a movement that will help cure a deep social illness across Turtle Island. We provide engaging and age-appropriate discussions on topics ranging from kindness and respect to the missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit individuals. We tailor presentations to meet individual classroom needs. The Moose Hide Campaign Moose Hide Campaign Learn about Balto and the heroic dogs and mushers of Alaska from the 1925 Serum Run to the Iditarod of today. Discover facts about the disease called diphtheria, and why the outbreak in Nome, Alaska is so famous. Experience how humans and huskies survive in harsh Arctic conditions by investigating real Iditarod-approved gear. Study maps to locate where the Iditarod is run today, and uncover the Cleveland connection to the well-known husky Balto! BALTO: A History of Humans, Huskies & Health in Alaska Cleveland Museum of Natural History Ron Kanutski will explain various ceremonies and life passages of the Anishinaabek people. Fasting, feasting, Drumming, Pipe, Lodge, Fire, Smudge, Examples of Indigenous traditions that will be explained. Stories and teachings delivered with care to ages who are visiting.
