Seeing my students use their self-
regulation skills to complete projects has
been a highlight of my personal and
professional goals.
I completed my Master's thesis in Social-
Emotional Learning and know that
students need opportunities to face
adversity in a caring, supportive
environment to truly master their ability
to persevere in hard times.
In December 2021, my class participated in
a large-group pouch-bag activity.
One of my students became incredibly
frustrated with sewing. Too dysregulated
to continue, he had to leave and take a
break with the school counsellor.
While he was gone, and when he returned,
I reminded the students that we can do
hard things and that we would successfully
finish this hard task.
When he returned to the classroom, his
peers were supportive and willing to help
him while he completed the task.
We chanted and cheered for one another
along the way, and the frustrated student
finished his project with such pride that he
still talks about it to this day.
