Laurie Schutt Igloolik High School Igloolik, Nunavut Introduction My name is Laurie Schutt. I am a science and math teacher at Igloolik High School. Over the past two years, I have taught grades 10 and 11 Experiential Science as well as grades 11 and 12 Math. I am currently vice principal of Igloolik High School and still teach grade 12 Math. Igloolik, like many Inuit communities in Nunavut, is isolated and difficult to reach. Travel is by air or skidoo in winter (weather permitting) and by boat for the very short summer season. The ice goes out in July and forms again in mid-October, leaving just a few months of open water. Many of the students have never left Igloolik. If they have travelled, it is for medical reasons or for land trips to hunt or fish. The students are aware of the greater world around them through social media but rarely see real-life examples or concepts relevant to what they are learning. This is where Connected North plays an invaluable role, connecting Inuit students to individuals with jobs and skills related to a topic being covered in the classroom.
