Participating in Connected North virtual field trips is mostly engaging in and of
itself; the kids appreciate the focus during the listening-type sessions, and they are
always able to match the energy for the exciting, busy-type sessions.
It is critical that they know what is expected of them by me in the classroom during
all types of sessions. Students need to have the skills and resources available to
handle the misses because although they are few and far between, they happen.
Probably one of every twenty or so sessions just don't land with the class for
whatever reason, and the class culture shines through when the kids can adapt
quietly and respectfully to meet their needs during these less-engaging moments.
I allow my students to take a 'break' by hopping
on one of our classroom bikes, or by grabbing
their drawing notebooks and drawing quietly at
their seats.
They know that regardless of what they are
doing, they are expected to be able to respond to
questions and participate in discussions.
