Guramrit Thandi is a Health and Society student in Brampton, Ontario, with an interest in the social determinants of health, particularly for South Asian immigrants. For her Fellowship project, Guramrit spearheaded the Culturally Sensitive Healthy Eating Workshop program. "Our mission is to provide dynamic and inclusive healthy food workshops tailored specifically for immigrants. By recognizing and respecting cultural differences, we aim to tackle the unique challenges immigrants face when adapting to a new country, especially concerning their health and nutrition." Through the Fellowship's support, Guramrit successfully organized workshops that engaged over 50 participants, providing education on healthy living and practical skills for preparing nutritious meals. The project directly impacted over 80 immigrants, empowering them to lead healthier lives and fostering a stronger sense of community through informative discussions and knowledge sharing. Culturally Sensitive Healthy Eating Workshop GURAMRIT THANDI HEALTH & WELL-BEING "My biggest success with the project, in addition to providing tangible items to community members for the betterment of their health, is the sense of community that was created. Our workshop was very informative and also provided community members with the opportunity to share their personal experiences and knowledge. This passing down of experiences and knowledge from elders to us, as a youth team, was invaluable. Further, other parts of my community became interested in us hosting more workshops, indicating a renewed interest in healthy living in my community." Aligned with SDG 3, Guramrit's initiative contributes to ensuring Good Health and Well-being for all. By addressing the unique health challenges faced by immigrant seniors, the workshops provided health literacy and resources in culturally appropriate and accessible formats. "This project helped me further realize the impact I can have in my community. I also learned the importance of continuously advocating for my community members, who may not be able to do that for themselves." Looking ahead, Guramrit envisions securing more funds to continue hosting workshops and advocating for ongoing support from municipal governments to fulfill SDG 3. 35 SPROUT IDEAS FELLOWSHIP IMPACT REPORT
