As a graduate student in anthropology and a research associate at the VITAM Center for Sustainable Health, Savannah Dubé is no stranger to academic research. But as invested as she is in her research work, she is just as passionate about the role of academia outside of the Ivory tower. Savannah is the founder of the student-led peer- review journal Era Novum, an interdisciplinary journal of social and environmental issues that explores themes such as migration, gender inequality, and sustainable development. For her Sprout Ideas Fellowship project, Savannah sought to help spread the word about the research within the journal to the general public by creating a scientific popularization platform. Savannah's platform helps students and researchers popularize their work using creative mediums like YouTube, blogs, and podcasts. The platform allows authors and non-authors to share their research insights in line with the journal's themes in a more accessible way to the general public. Additionally, Savannah organized a conference on scientific popularization where attendees were taught to develop the skills needed to make scientific research more accessible and exciting to the general public. SPROUT IDEAS FELLOWSHIP IMPACT REPORT 32 Science For All SAVANNAH DUBÉ EDUCATION "A person who attended the conference on scientific popularization learned skills that she was able to use to share the findings of her master's studies. She worked with an illiterate and vulnerable population during her graduate studies, so she was particularly concerned about spreading back the knowledge from her thesis to the community and beyond it in an inclusive manner. During the event, she learned tools to successfully do that. She kept us updated on the unfolding of her podcast, and we are so proud of her!" Savannah's work is connected to addressing eleven SDGs, including Quality Education (Goal 4), Reduced Inequalities (Goal 10), and Gender Equality (Goal 5). The next phase for Savannah's project involves expanding its impact and reach to other countries as well as to foster more partnerships with other journals and researchers. "My vision for the next phase of my social innovation journey involves a continued commitment scientific popularization. My goal is to inspire fellow researchers, not just students, to actively engage in spreading awareness about their work to the broader public."
