SPORTS & RECREATION Climbing Mentorship Program ZANNA EKEROTH Zanna Ekeroth has high sights. Originally from Sweden, Zanna now calls Penticton, British Columbia home, where she works in early childhood education and as an EDI advocate in co-operative organizations. A natural community builder, Zanna's passion for diversity and inclusion could not be kept inside. Or even at ground level. Her Sprout Ideas project, the 'Babes in the Bluffs Climbing Mentorship Program,' provides a supportive space for women and gender- diverse mountain climbers in the Skaha Bluffs region, who are often marginalized within the mountain sport community. At the heart of the initiative was the pairing of experienced climbers with those new to the sport. Participants met virtually, attended workshops, and engaged in peer-to-peer learning. Throughout the season, they gathered for climbing outings, workshops led by certified instructors, and social events, including an end-of-season celebration. The atmosphere of the program was decidedly non-judgemental, with one participant describing it as a place where "egos were checked at the door." Another participant highlighted the positive impact this atmosphere had on them, "The Babes in the Bluffs gave me a space to be myself, make mistakes safely, find a community who understands, foster self- growth, and be proud of who I am." Zanna's project helped support a combination of four SDGs: Good Health & Well-being (Goal 3), Gender Equality (Goal 5), Reduced Inequalities (Goal 10), and Life on Land (Goal 15), all on a local level. Zanna's vision for the future of the program is one of expansion and deeper engagement. Her team has grown and they have already taken their next step incorporating as a non- profit organization to help them build credibility and access more sustainable funding. Under the new moniker "Rock On Collective," the initiative aims to create a more inclusive outdoor community, breaking free from historical mountain sport stereotypes. With plans to collaborate closely with the Syilx people and further decolonize rock climbing practices, Zanna envisions a future where outdoor spaces are accessible and welcoming to people of all identities.
