"Going forward, the project will involve sharing the resource of the Community Cookbook and continuing to work in partnership with organizations to deliver culinary skill-building programs. There is also the possibility of creating community cookbooks for all seasons." Youth & Elder Cooking Classes FOOD SECURITY AIMEE YURRIS Raised in Yellowknife, Aimee Yurris is on a mission to strengthen her community's bonds through the power of food. Currently pursuing her master's degree in Public Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo, with a research focus on Northern food security, Aimee brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep-rooted connection to her work. 'Kitchen Talks' served as a weekly gathering at the Yellowknife Youth Centre, offering hands-on cooking experiences, cultural exploration, and conversations with community guests, including a chef, a dietitian, and an Indigenous Elder sharing wisdom and stories. She partnered with several youth-serving organizations in her community to maximize her project's impact. At popular request, Aimee also organized an Apron Sewing Workshop for the youth to make custom aprons, adding a personal touch and sense of pride to their culinary adventures. Inspired by the Fellowship's focus on longer term project sustainability, she wanted to "create a resource that would live beyond the Fellowship." Therefore, she topped off the 12-week program by curating the Fall 2023 Community Cookbook, a collection of recipes from the 'Kitchen Talks,' SPROUT IDEAS FELLOWSHIP IMPACT REPORT 26
