"There is particular demand for a youth forum on climate change, as impacts of environmental degradation are increasingly felt in the Yukon," Emily shares. "There is energy for change among local youth, and this municipal forum was a space to ask difficult questions, learn about the politics that will shape climate action in their city, and hold future leaders accountable." The forum came at a particularly important time as the Yukon saw forest fires, record levels of flooding, and experienced a heat wave and heat records. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the forum was hosted virtually with multiple 'viewing parties' organized in accordance with public health guidelines around the city. The online format was an opportunity to increase accessibility and reach a greater number of youth around the territory. "I was very excited that we were able to host the first Mayoral debate of this election, and set a tone by having the conversation centred on youth and climate change," reflects Emily. "I was really proud to see the number of local youth that tuned in to the event or got in touch with me about it afterwards."
