Hot Meals for the People's
Park Community
Kristen Tymoshuk
P
eople's Park is an encampment for
unhoused people in Halifax, Nova
Scotia, that arose as a response to
the violent evictions of those living in tents
and crisis shelters in the summer of 2021.
Kristen Tymoshuk was volunteering at the
park for months and wanted to further
support the residents by cooking hot meals
for them. She used her #RisingYouth grant
to subsidize the cost of ingredients to cook
one meal a week for the approximately 30
people in the park for two months.
Kristen cooked delicious and warm
meals in her home and delivered them
to the park, helping to combat food
insecurity for a vulnerable population.
When the residents in the park decreased,
she used the remaining grant funding to
purchase food items to help stock the
community fridge.
"My biggest success was the validation
from one of the residents I often chatted
with at the park," Kristen shares. "Every
time they saw my name on the meal sign-
up list they would let me know they were
really excited to eat whatever I brought,
and were always the first person to tell me
the food was delicious."
