54 # R I S I N G Y O U T H C O M M U N I T Y I M P A C T V O L . 2 Hot Meals for the People's Park Community Kristen Tymoshuk P eople's Park is an encampment for unhoused people in Halifax, Nova Scotia, that arose as a response to the violent evictions of those living in tents and crisis shelters in the summer of 2021. Kristen Tymoshuk was volunteering at the park for months and wanted to further support the residents by cooking hot meals for them. She used her #RisingYouth grant to subsidize the cost of ingredients to cook one meal a week for the approximately 30 people in the park for two months. Kristen cooked delicious and warm meals in her home and delivered them to the park, helping to combat food insecurity for a vulnerable population. When the residents in the park decreased, she used the remaining grant funding to purchase food items to help stock the community fridge. "My biggest success was the validation from one of the residents I often chatted with at the park," Kristen shares. "Every time they saw my name on the meal sign- up list they would let me know they were really excited to eat whatever I brought, and were always the first person to tell me the food was delicious."
