C
amp Connections is a camp
located relatively close to the
Ingraham Trail in Yellowknife,
Northwest Territories that has access
to the river, multiple outdoor games, a
cookhouse, and sleeping cabins. Having
spent time at this camp, Jordan Epelon
decided to use his #RisingYouth grant
to support an on-the-land overnight trip
and two-day trips for a group of 15 youth
between the ages of 12-20 who live in
foster homes in Yellowknife.
As part of the Gaining Lifeskills Our
Way (GLOW) program, the youth spent
their time canoeing and kayaking,
playing interactive games, talking about
the importance of the outdoors and
nature for their mental health, and
spending time with friends. Two adult
volunteers also spent time talking with
the youth about what it means to work
in the Northwest Territories.
"We learned how to kayak and did
some exterior activities out at Camp
Connections," Jordan shares. "The
project was youth-focused, and it will
now be a long-term project for youth to
learn year after year."
