Growing up with digital tools and the Internet, she has seen and experienced the transformative power of technology — both the life changing benefits, as well as their potentially damaging consequences. She hopes to help build more equitable and humane technologies, which is why she leads the non-profit STEM for FEM. With the support of the executive team at STEM for FEM, Sophie organized a hackathon-style event called Quantahacks with the aim of engaging youth with current issues around the environment and health through the lens of technology. Quantahacks specifically targeted communities that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM). She specifically aimed to help close the gender gap in these fields by appealing to girls around the world. "Quantahacks created opportunities for underrepresented groups in STEM and encouraged many to take the first step into the world of computer programming," explained Sophie. "We encouraged them to pursue their passions and offered valuable resources to support their aspirations." Sophie hopes to bring more plentiful and interactive workshops to future events with STEM for FEM as a way of providing more opportunities for the engaged and dynamic community she is building.
