ACQUIRE: KRISTA PAUL'S FIRESIDE CHAT VIDEO https://www.firesidechats.ca/video/krista-paul Krista Paul is a Metis woman and mother of two, from Saskatoon in Treaty 6 territory. Krista \ has been involved in the hair industry since 2009. Krista believes in the power of make-up and styling to enhance people's natural beauty and to bring out their confidence. Krista is passion- ate about her career and is committed to constantly educating herself with the latest products, techniques and skills for her clients. Start the video of Krista's interview with Fireside Chats. To debrief the video, ask the class the following questions: 1.How did Krista reinvigorate her passion for hairstyling? 2.Why did Krista become a hairstylist? 3.Krista talked about people outgrowing their environments. What are some reasons why people change their environments? Students will use the concepts learned in Krista's interview and apply the idea of positive habits and growth mindset to create a self-portrait art piece displaying things that they love about them- selves and an art piece that depicts themselves in a positive way. APPLY: SELFLOVE SELFPORTRAIT ART Students will create a self-portrait that highlights features they love and value about themselves and depict themselves in a positive light. It can be very hard to love ourselves with negative depictions across social media, the negativity behind body dysmorphia, and the impacts of eurocentric/western beauty trends have on youth. This activity serves to reinforce the idea that everyone is beautiful and our positive qualities should be celebrated. Students will use either their choice of art style/medium or one chosen by their teachers. How students create the self-portrait art is at the teacher's discretion (drawing, graphic art, painting, collage, etc). Provide students with mirrors so they can view themselves as they create. Show the "Self-Portrait Teacher Example" to the class so students can get an idea of what they are creating. The minimum students must draw would be of themself from the neck up. Students can go as far as drawing their entire body. The students must ensure they are being respectful with their drawings. In their self portrait, students will need to use colour, creativity, and show that they put eort and time into their art piece. Students must include 15-20 words describing something that they love or value about themselves. Example: •I love my hair, my hair colour, my hair length, my eyes, my eye shape, my eye colour, my height, my smile, my laugh, my voice. •My best qualities are that I am passionate, strong willed, silly, humorous, resilient, kind, good in school, and a great friend.
